I am a student midwife and in my first year in Edinburgh. I absolutely love it and can't believe how fast the time goes.
I have 2 children ages 5 and 10 and am, so far, managing my time between them and study!
I start my labour suite placement in 2 weeks which I can't wait for! I used to be a support worker in the maternity unit so have an insight into the hospital which helps.
I will email all my coleagues this website to let them know about it,
congrats on your first year im at the first stage of starting an access course in sept and im going to be doing some breast feeding support soon at my local hospital which icant wait . i have 3 children 2 3 and 5 , did you find the application process hard im really scared that i wont get in. kim
I worked as a maternity assistant before I started my midwifery course and didnt get accepted to my first choice (300 applicants and 20 places) but i didnt give up and finally got a place elsewhere. Keep confident, Im sure the breastfeeding support you will be doing will be to your advantage
Good for you starting your access course, I went to night school to get higher human biology and communications 4 to start the course. I was so excited as I applied when I left school (some time ago! lol) and didn't get in as was a higher short. 15 years later I got the higher and started the course. It just goes to prove if you want something keep trying.
As for the application process, I attended the open day and found out roughly what they were looking for. They filter the applications from qualifications, then about yourself, I wrote a huge speal there, and lastly references.
Was Marlena, I worked as a Clinical Support Worker in the maternity unit so was really lucky to get a charge midwife to be one of my referees. I is pot luck whether you get in or not. But good luck and keep trying if you dont the first time. :-)
Hi Well done getting an interview. What uni is it for??
I got a tip about reading up about some recent articles related to midwifery and they asked me about it in the interview. It depends on who interviews you. One of the girls with me said it was really informal, but mine was quite hard, but I think it's because I had already worked in maternity they asked me a lot of questions!!!
I am really enjoying uni. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
its the greatest feeling ever! we had to watch 5 births first before being involved in catching the babies, is that the same at your practice placement?
Not sure, think we are meant to watch a couple but because I worked there and sometimes scribed during the deliveries I have seen lots already, not sure how that will work though.
Will keep you informed of my first 'catch'
Hi everybody
I have been offered a place on midwifery and am due to start in sept 08. I cant wait i am so excited (as well as nervous). Has anybody got any good tips for nerves when the big day starts?
All I can say is make sure you do a lot of reading around midwifery so you arearmed with some knowledge before you start. You will have to be well organised to so make sure you have a diary! Where are you going to be?
